Whatever follows 'I am' will come looking for you....

We have just held our 3rd ‘Bat’s in the Belfry’ meeting and once again, it brought together a group of new faces and our guest speaker, Sherri Johnson.
I had met Sherri at a business networking event, and again, we ‘clicked’ because we both have a purpose to empower women. Again, I had had a long coffee date with her (starting to see a pattern here??) and was humbled and inspired by her story. I have learned over recent months to open my mind and embrace opportunity as it knocks on the door. I can honestly say that since adopting this mind set, I have had so many beautiful souls enter my life. Sherri is one of them, and just like Jackie, I knew I had to invite her to talk to our group! Thankfully, she accepted the challenge!
Sherri shared her story and moved us all with her candid vulnerability. It became very clear why she now assists women to attain financial stability and independence. I had never thought of our position in this way previously, but as women, statistically we outlive our spouse or, will end up divorced. Either way, we need to have the knowledge and know how to survive financially. She also explained the work of ‘YouVille’, a recovery residence for women that was started by the Grey Nuns, Sisters of Charity and has been helping women in Calgary turn their lives around since 1977. I have determined that I want to visit the shelter and will certainly share that experience with you all at a later date.
As I have said previously, it is usually those of us who have turned our own lives around that want to do the same for others. Usually, by sharing our experiences and our hard learned lessons, we empathize with others who find themselves in similar situations and reach out to them to help them discover the ways in which they can move on, imparting our own experiences and sharing our own developed areas of expertise. Sherri is one of those wise women. She has lived in what she calls ‘her normal’, in fear of her own bad choices and recounts instances that you simply cannot begin to imagine the woman who sits before you could possibly have found herself in. But she did, and she has managed to turn herself and her circumstances completely around.
My ‘take homes’ from her inspirational talk are as follows:
Choose wisely - you are responsible for your choices and you always have a choice
Look for the wisdom and accept that you can’t do everything alone
Be humble. Humble doesn’t mean the “ah shucks” kind of thing. It means I don’t know everything and I’m willing to learn
When something bothers you - always look inside. The reality is there are very few – if any – people in your life or this world whose daily function is to 'piss you off'
What other people think of me is none of my business
Surround yourself with people who love and support you. Choose who you want to spend time with and be strategic and intentional about it
What you focus on grows and in this world the focus is on the negative. Don’t get sucked in to that negative realm - no one wants to hang out with a 'dog gone disillusioned cry baby' – and really no one cares about your problems – they have problems of their own!
Understand the power of 'I am' statements. What follows the 'I am' will always come looking for you (Joel Osteen)
Sometimes you give, sometimes you receive and most times when you give - you receive! It’s important to give back in life
Take care of yourself financially. Statistics show that on average we outlive men. Learn about finances and always be in a position to take care of yourself
I have taken the time to focus upon each of these points and you know? They make a whole lot of sense! And I encourage any of you to do the same!
When considering point number 9, I took the time to find out more about ‘YouVille’ and am seriously considering giving something most precious to me, my time. If you want to find out how you can help, take a look at www.youville.net and think about how you may be able to give.
I have also considered number 10! I am one of those statistics. A date with Sherri to eat Tom’s House of Pizza and discuss finance is in the diary! You can arrange a ‘date’ with Sherri by calling her on 403 464 3781!!
